Marist Brothers High School sprinter Keasi Naidroka won the senior boys 100 metres event in the Suva Zone Two competition at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.

The 19-year-old from Nalauwaki, Yasawa was full of joy winning the event but admitted it was really tough given the competition from the other schools.

“I feel happy and good about this win even since I was not expecting it,” Naidroka said.

“You see this event being won by different athletes of different schools and you watch it on television hoping to be like them one day. I think that day for me, has come true and it feels good to be in this position but it wasn’t easy for me.

“I trained hard but I also knew that these athletes have gone through the same training so I wasn’t sure whether I would win or not.

“The competition is fierce now and the level of competition has changed a lot, you can feel it, past athletes have set the bar high and athletes now are reaching that bar and overcoming it so we need to train really hard if we want to win.”

Naidroka said that running is nothing new to him as it runs in the family; his older brother was a runner so it was a no brainer for him to do the same.

“This runs in the family, I used to run and make it an extra curriculum but I think now I am going to take it more seriously.

“I dedicate this win to my school, the endless amount of supporters who turn up every year and not forgetting my coaches as well who do a lot for us athletes.”
