Taito Waqavakatoga was yesterday presented his Civil Marriage Celebrant certificate.

It is a certificate with a difference. Acting-Prime Minister and Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said: “This, of course, will allow the marriage celebrant to be able to conduct marriage ceremonies anywhere couples like. Whether they want to have the marriage in the park or at the beach and at whatever time of the day and night.

“We had made amendments to the laws to allow marriage celebrants outside the normal marriage officer regime to be able to take up these positions and to provide better services to members of the public.”

Mr Waqavakatoga said it was an honour as he was passionate towards the work.

“I started doing this work way back when I was the District Officer for about seven years before becoming the registrar general.”

He said he was looking forward to serving the public especially those in the tourism industry as a lot of tourists get married in Fiji.
