Government is committed to strengthening the Fiji Cluster System which will improve humanitarian co-ordination and overall response in times of disasters.

This was highlighted this week by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Permanent Secretary, Meleti Bainimarama, in an address to members of the Inter-Cluster Group.

Adopted initially in 2011, the Fiji Cluster System groups humanitarian and disaster response agencies in sectoral clusters such as food security, health, or communications, to improve and streamline humanitarian co-ordination with existing national frameworks of disaster management.

Speaking to leaders of various clusters, Mr Bainimarama said that this year will undoubtedly be the most important year for building the future of the Fiji Cluster system and placing the building blocks for a stronger, more-resilient Fiji.

He said: “While forging this new future, this Inter-Cluster Group is the most vitally important interface between humanitarian actors in Fiji and the Fiji Government.”
