Participating in his first zone meet, Jai Narayan College sprinter Sekope Puamau broke the sub-junior boy’s 100 metres record in the Suva Zone Two meet at the ANZ Stadium, Suva yesterday.

Puamau clocked a time of 11.71 seconds beating the old record of 12:20s set in 1996 by Suva Grammar School student Vulaono Bose.

The 13-year-old could not believe it when he was told that he has set a new record since he was not expecting to even win the event.

“I honestly did not think I would break the record or even come first and I thank God for what I have achieved today,” Puamau said.

“I trained really hard, I ran in the Chow Games and won a gold medal in the 75 metres so I think I have been improving each year and I want it to stay that way.”
