Six men charged with sexual offences against a teenage girl were acquitted this week by the High Court in Labasa.

Sekove Ryland, Paul Senikuba, Ba Waqovi, Jone Kaiatia, Jonetani Naborisi and Jonetani Sereivalu, who were represented by Legal Aid Lawyers Salote Nasedra and Sharmila Devi, appeared before Justice Vincent Perera.

During the ruling, Justice Perera said: “There were a number of significant inconsistencies and improbabilities in the account given by the complainant relevant to all four counts.

“Because of this the prosecution has failed to prove the four counts beyond reasonable doubt. Therefore I found that none of the accused were guilty of the charges they are accused of. All six persons are acquitted accordingly.”

All six men had pleaded not guilty to all their charges. There were three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault and the base charges were based on four different alleged incidences between August 2013 and January 2015 on Qamea Island in Cakaudrove.
