It was an unbelievable moment for Marist Brothers High school runner Emosi Sukanaivalu who took out the senior boys 400 metres final in the Suva Zone Two meet at ANZ Stadium, yesterday.

The 19-year-old from Sawaieke, Gau said he was nervous and never thought he would come first against the Suva Grammar School runners.

“This is an exciting and unbelievable moment for me, when I was running and looked back I saw the others behind me and I knew I had to push on even though I was tired,” Sukanaivalu said.

“Knowing that I had come first was a huge relief for me but I’m excited and happy that all my hard work during training has paid off.”

Sukanaivalu has been running in the 1500 metres from Year 9 and only decided to run in the 400m last year.

“I took part in the 400 metres for the first time last year and I didn’t do well because it was something new for me,” he said.

“Running in this event is not like running in the 1500 metres where it’s much longer and more tiring. Here it’s much shorter and you need to be fast and stay ahead of the pack.

Sukanaivalu said his toughest opponents in the Coca-Cola Games will come from Queen Victoria School and Natabua High School athletes.
