I made a promise to my father that I will live his dream.

An emotional Sikiti Vakatalai, 28, of Moce, Lau, said this after she graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of the South Pacific (USP).

Ms Vakatalai said her inspiration was her late father, Cama Vakatalai.

“I had made a pact with my father who always wanted to pursue his career in Biology and Chemistry, but unfortunately he could not.

“He never got a chance to graduate, but I made a promise to him that I will relive his dream for the both of us.

Her father passed away in 2008.

“I know wherever he is, he is showering me with his blessings and because of him I walked across the stage in this gown and a degree in my hand,” Ms Vakatalai said.

She said the reason she majored in Science was because her father suffered from an unknown disease.

“Even the doctors did not know what he had suffered from and he eventually died because of it.

“The doctors could not find any cure for what he had.

“So my dad told me that if I studied Science, then I had to try and find what he had suffered from so that no one else would go through the same and leave their young family behind,” Ms Vakatalai said.
