The Oceania Sailing Federation is going to set-up an Oceania Sailing Education Academy (OSEA) in Suva.

This was confirmed yesterday to SUNsports by Oceania Sailing Federation president John Tierney.

“The plan is to have the Oceania Sailing Education Academy in Suva, which is going to be adjacent to the Maritime School and the University of the South Pacific as we will develop Laucala Bay as our Oceania Training Centre,” Tierney said.

“The reason why we doing this, is because it’s not just training for the sport of sailing but it is also to learn the culture and tradition of sailing. This is where we go back to the traditional voyaging and Polynesian sailing. So we are combining our culture and tradition with modern delivery of sailing.”

Tierney also said they are focussing on developing both the academic and sports aspects of an athlete. He also confirmed the sailors would be on scholarship as they train.

“The way we see, it’s sailors that will be on scholarship and that will include subjects that they are doing at USP or at the maritime sailing school.” he added.
