Island Sisters have retained their Tailevu Netball Opening knockout title after they beat Congo Waimanu 11-5 at Vuniiviivi courts in Nausori yesterday.

Coach Tokasa Osborne said they are extremely delighted to retain their title despite the tough competition from Police, Delta Tigers and Mystics.

“I have roped in a lot of new girls this year, I only kept two girls from the previous team but the rest are school girls,” Osborne said.

“Despite being new, they have really proved themselves but I felt that they were really fatigued because of the heat but that only means that we need to build-up on our fitness.

“It was a tough competition because we had teams like Police and Delta Tigers who have come back after two years but I am so happy that the girls held their ground and pushed through.”

Meanwhile, Tailevu Netball Association president Nanise Narayan said they are concentrating on building-up their under- 21 girls in order to get them through to the national teams.

“The competition now is getting tough today and there is an opening for us and that’s why we are starting early this year.

“Our main focus is to develop the girls and get them into the national team. We want to see at least one or two players get into the national side then we are happy because we know that we are doing our job, because most of the players come from nearby villages.

“The response from the girls has been good, before when we hold competitions there used to only be like seven teams but now we have fifteen which is a lot for us.

“We want to encourage girls out there to take up sport and be active because you never know who might notice their talents,” she added.
