Levani Botia made his debut at openside flanker for La Rochelle when they beat Vili Mata’s Edinburgh 32-22 to reach the English Challenge Cup semi-finals.

La Rochelle currently leads the French Top 14 competition and the move made by head coach Patrice Collazo in switching Botia from centre to flanker baffled many French rugby writers.

According to French rugby columnist Sylvain Labbe, the power of Botia who he dubbed the Fijian Bulldozer still made many sparks from his new position.

Speaking at a press conference Botia said: “At first I thought it was a joke but Patrice told me he was serious! I said okay! No matter what number I have on the back, as long as I’m on the pitch.”

He also added that former All Blacks flanker and No.8 Victor Vito had been guiding him.

“Victor helps me a lot. He tells me what to do. I learn a lot from him,” he added.

Meanwhile, former Fijian 7s winger Josua Raisuqe Wini was red carded as his club Stade Francaise edged out Ospreys 25-21 to book a semifinal spot. Ospreys try was scored by Flying Fijian centre Josh Matavesi.

Meanwhile, flanker Peceli Yato and Noa Nakaitaci helped Clermont walloped Toulon 29-9 while Munster thrashed Toulouse 41-16.
