Govt Invests $7.2M To Build Ship For Relief

A shipbuilding company in Malaysia has been given the job to build a multi-purpose vessel for the country.

The cost of building the vessel is $7.2million.

Government, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport signed a contract with the Eastern Marine Ship Building (EMSB) last month. The construction is expected to take a year.

The multi-purpose vessel is designed to provide quick relief response and basic medical services during the aftermath of natural disasters, medical outreach programmes or disease outbreaks.

Lessons learned from past natural disasters have provided the incentive to modernise Fiji’s disaster response capabilities and make disaster response more proactive rather than reactive.

Not only would cart relief supplies like general cargoes and water, it will also be used for maintenance and repair works on light houses and beacons i, and would have medical support capability.

It will contain a fully equipped operating and recovery room, and can carry up to 40 passengers. It will have the capacity to transport 316 tonnes of water to drought-stricken islands and cart a maximum of 250 tonnes of general cargoes.

The vessel is built under classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NKK), an independent and non-profitable regulatory body that is empowered to certify ships according to International Maritime Organisation standards.

A two-member delegation from Fiji, which included the Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Paul Bayly, and acting director Government Shipping Services Josese Lawaniyasana, officiated the signing and the keel laying ceremony.
