Promising marathon runner Avikash Lal is confident of doing well internationally after a training stint in Uganda.

The 21-year-old Nadi lad said the reason he trained in Uganda was because of the high altitude which lifted his performance.

“It was a great experience especially being the only one representing Fiji,” he told SUNsports yesterdat.

“I also got to train among a few of the world’s best athletes and coaches who have vast experience in terms of performing at the Olympic Games.

“Training with these athletes under world class coaches from Kenya, Uganda and South Africa really inspired me to become a better athlete especially on how to make it to the breaking time.

“The other reason why I wasn’t able to train in Fiji was because of our locality, which is below sea level.

“Again in this sport training in high altitude is very crucial if we are to lift our performance.”

Lal said preparations are on track and he is looking forward to the upcoming Games where he will compete in.

“My next competition will be the Oceania Games in Suva where I need to win the 10km and 5km races in order to qualify for the World Championship in London.

“After that I will be competing in the Pacific Mini Games in December.

“Then early next year it will be the Commonwealth Games as I try to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

“My aim is to train hard and improve on my time,” he added.

Lal is also requesting the business sector if they could assist him in terms of sponsorship so he could continue on with his overseas training.
