Koroilavesau and delegation visited Hainan Province

The Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau, led a team consisting of senior officials from the ministry to Hainan Province in the People’s Republic of China to explore more opportunities for growth for our local fisheries sector.

The delegation met with Governor of the Hainan Province.

Discussions on fisheries co-operation was conducted with the heads of the fisheries institutions and the Provincial leaders.

The team also visited aquaculture sites and marine universities and institutions of the two provinces where exchange programmes and places for our students were offered.

Mr Koroilavesau also delivered a speech on Fiji’s general marine economy development and shared our experiences on how an island country could develop its marine economy at an economic summit called the Hainan Island Economic Co-operation Forum.

He also attended the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) meeting in Bangkok, Thailand.

Hainan is located in the Southern-most part of China, the administrative area includes Hainan Island, the Xisha Islands, the Nansha Islands, the Zhongsha Islands and their sea area; includes land area of 35,400 square kilometres, water area of about 2 million square kilometres, accounting for about 2/3rd total sea area of China.

The marine ecological environment of Hainan is excellent, with coral reefs, mangroves, sea-grass beds and other typical marine ecosystem existed, rich in fishery resources.

Hainan contribution from fisheries is similar to Fiji like in marine fishing, aquaculture and conservation of fishery resources.

Fisheries senior officials who accompanied the Minister were the deputy secretary for Fisheries, Sanaila Naqali, chief research officer (Fisheries) Aisake Batibasaga, and principal fisheries officer (Aquaculture) Shailendra Singh. The delegation also visited Guadong province where the spent two days.
