Fiji will be commemorating the World Health Day today through awareness programmes organised by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services based on the theme, “Depression-Let’s Talk”.

The programme in Suva will begin with a march from the Flea Market to Ratu Sukuna Park at 9am and the programme will be officially opened by the Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar.

Similar awareness programmes have been organised in Lautoka and Labasa to create discussions on ways to treat depression, including stress and anger management sessions.

As a build-up to this year’s Wold Health Day celebrations, the Health Ministry has also launched an information tool kit in regards to addressing depression.

The information package launched last week has been prepared by the ministry with assistance from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and it has been distributed to 950 schools around Fiji.

It will also be used by health professionals at the divisional hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals, health centres and nursing stations around Fiji.

The ministry had also partnered with Lifeline Fiji in organising the two day National Symposium on suicide earlier this week.

The ministry has also reached out to youth groups to create a better understanding about depression and educate the public that depression is treatable and preventable.

Through intensified awareness the ministry aims to create a better understanding of the illness to help reduce the stigma associated with it so that people can confidently seek help and treatment needed.

The Health Ministry is seeking public and media support to maximise awareness on this year’s World Health Day awareness programmes.
