Government has taken an objective assessment of the country to ensure that it unlocks the potential of people living in the lower end of the socio-economic scale.

Therefore, it is ensuring that people get equal opportunities.

This was highlighted by the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat public seminar on ‘Income Inequality in the Pacific’ at the University of the South Pacific yesterday.

He was one of four panellists.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was responding to a statement from a report which said that the nation was one of seven countries in the Asian Pacific Region where inequality levels had decreased.

This was highlighted in the Human Development Index (HDI) report launched recently.

“Those at the lower end of the socio-economic scale aren’t paying tax and they are saving money, as far as disposable income is concerned this creates a number of opportunities for consumption and saving,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Other panellists at the seminar included the Deputy Director for the Institute of National Affairs (INA) Papua New Guinea Marjorie Andrew, Country Director for Timor-Leste, PNG and Pacific Islands, World Bank Michel Kerf and Executive Director Pacific Islands Association of Non-Governmental Organisation (PIANGO) Emele Duituturaga.
