A warehouse and a residential flat at the top floor of the International Embroidery building was destroyed by a fire at Toorak, Suva, yesterday.

International Embroidery Company Limited and Headwear Specialists Fiji’s manager, Rohit Lal, said the estimated cost of damage to his embroidery machines was $5 million.

“Each of our machines cost us $200,000 because they are quality sewing machines.”

Priya Kumar, an employee of International Embroidery Company Limited, said: “I have been employed here for a long time and such incident has never taken place before.

“It is so unfortunate that because of the top flat on fire, we do not have work because our machines and materials are destroyed,” Ms Kumar said.

Internal Embroidery employee, Krish Ram, went inside the shop to cover the machines with tarpaulins and said the machines were soaked in water.

“All the machines are wet and the warehouse has about a foot of water inside the shop,” Mr Ram said.

The fire started around 9.30am in the building at High Street, Toorak.

National Fire Authority (NFA) firefighters extinguished the fire in the residential flat and the warehouse.

The firefighters managed to contain the blaze and prevented it from spreading to other neighbouring businesses on the ground floor.

According to the NFA, the Suva Fire Station received a fire emergency call at 9.38am. They arrived at the location at 9.44am. Four fire trucks were engaged to put out the blaze.

NFA investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
