Parents and villagers of Navuniivi in Ra are excited and pleased that one of their sons, Paula Draunisenikula Junior, was chosen to represent Fiji at the Singapore 7s series.

The 24-year-old looked shy, but full of hope as he left the country last night to join his Vodafone Fijians teammates.

He is one of the three replacement players. The others are Josua Vici and Lemeki Tulele.

Draunisenikula looked like he was ready to fight for his country and this excitement was shared by family members who were at the Nadi International Airport to bid him farewell.

His father and namesake, Paula Draunisenikula Senior, was beaming with joy.

“I am so happy, I had been praying for this for a very long time and I am so proud of him and what he has achieved today,” he said.

“I got a call from him last night (Monday night) that he has been called to join the Fijian 7s team, I just sat on my bed and prayed thanking the Lord for his provisions in my son’s life.

Draunisenikula Jr is the fifth child in the family, but is the first among them to represent the nation in any sport.

“The whole village at Navuniivi are so proud of him, those in Fiji and abroad. Until now we have been receiving messages of how happy they feel,” Draunisenikula Senior said.

“I feel happy because I believe my son will go there and lift the team and boost them to another level.”

He said he had always encouraged his son to put God first always, play to the best of his ability and make Fiji proud.

Draunisenikula Junior used to play for Army Green before his selection to join the national side.
