Government has gifted an outboard motor engine to Doi Village School in Ono-i-Lau.

The gift was delivered to the school by two officials from the Ministry of Education,LaveniaYavita( MOE staff) and Sainiana Naikalivou (MOE Transport Officer) who visited the school last month 17th March.

School manager EmosiYabaki said the school had requested the Government in July last year for an outboard motor engine.

The Government responded positively and said it would be delivered this year.

In the past years MrYabaki said the school relied on the village boat to transport students to the Health Centre in Ono Levu. He also said that whenever they wanted to pick up their school stationeries from the boat, they would have to use the village boat.

The school he said had been operating for 40 years and finally they now had their boat which they had been crying for.

During the delivery of the boat village conducted a traditional ceremony called the “cere” to welcome the boat to their shores. The boat was delivered by two staff from the Ministry of Education (MOE).

For the school it has a roll of 17 students from classes 1 to 8.

Mr Yabaki said they were also requesting the Government for a 24 hours solar system to help the staff send information across to Suva.

“At the moment we go to Ono Levu and use their facilities.”

Boat is the only mode of transportation to the island, and the school is requesting the Government if a ship could service them twice a month.
