Ten University of Fiji law students were admitted to the bar as legal practitioners at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

Justice William Calanchini addressed the new practitioners, congratulated them on their success and welcomed their family members to be part of the practitioners’ career.

He said the students managed to put in a lot of sacrifice and many have had to study under difficult circumstances.

Justice Calanchini said the day was significant because it was just the start of their legal careers.

“I can assure you that this day is a day that you will remember for the rest of your life and it is a day that is significant in your lives and career,” he said.

He reminded the practitioners of their oath and told them to remember that they were the officers of the court, where their first duty is the court and second duty is to their client, which cannot override their duty to the court.

“The legal profession is a profession that insists upon the highest standard of integrity, which leads to good reputation and it takes a lifetime to build up on your professional lives; a reputation of being a person of integrity that can be trusted.

“Unfortunately it take just one mistake for all that to be shattered,” he said.

Justice Calanchini reminded the practitioners that they were the most junior in the profession and they were just starting off.

He said there would always be someone more senior and with more experience than them.

He also advised them to seek assistance from their seniors.

He urged the practitioners to understand the law and work hard with their new profession.
