Ministry Probe Newborn’s Death

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is investigating an incident relating to the death of a newborn at the Lautoka Hospital on Tuesday night.

It comes after the neighbour of the mother posted photos of the dead baby bleeding from the nose and a video of the nurse allegedly behaving unprofessionally to the family.

In a statement, the ministry said it was aware of the case and was investigating the matter.

“The ministry is in contact with the family concerned,” the statement said.

It refrained from providing further details stating it was out of respect for the family’s privacy at this difficult time.

The post made by one, Pritikia Kumar, claimed that the nurses at the hospital ignored the labour pains of the woman.

However, she was taken to the hospital again on Tuesday evening because of labour pain. She gave birth shortly after.

The video allegedly showed the hospital staff yelling at the baby’s father.

The father of the child, Mithun Permal, 32, claimed his wife’s initial due date was on April 8, 2017.

She was told instead that it was now April 18.

But on Tuesday night as they approached Natabua in Lautoka, she was in labour.

“When we arrived at the hospital we demanded a stretcher since my wife could not stand upright, but then we had no option to lift her right to the delivery bed where she made the delivery,” he said.

Mr Permal said it was a normal delivery.

He alleged: “They kept the baby for observation for about one hour and they delivered the baby to my wife with blood gushing from her nose.

“This has happened to me today, tomorrow it may happen to another and hope this comes to a stop.”

Mr Permal’s wife is still recovering.

The post-mortem of the baby is expected to take place tomorrow, Mr Permal said.
