New Caledonia will be on the lookout for Australia and New Zealand as they aim for the number one spot in the ITTF Oceania Junior Championship at the Vodafone Arena today.

Head coach Cathy Gauthier said the competition will be extremely tough for them despite the fact that half her players have been exposed to international competitions.

“Our preparations have been going well, the players are getting into the rhythm of things and training each day,” Gauthier said.

“We have a well versed set of players, most of them are aware of how tough the competition will be because they have played in international tournaments.

“But we also have a few new players who will be experiencing this level of competition for the first time and I am eager to see how well they perform and handle the pressure.

“We know the competition will be tough, I think our biggest opponents that we will find hard to beat will be Australia and New Zealand.

“Those two countries have been playing the sport for a while and have the facilities and experience so they are on our radar of teams to look out for.

“There is also the Fijian team, the two sisters Sally and Grace Yee are looking strong and they have had good exposure in international tournaments so they will be hard to compete against as well.

“But I am confident in my players and we are preparing accordingly.”
