Brothers Remanded For Alleged Assault

Two brothers who allegedly assaulted a driver in Lautoka in revenge were yesterday remanded by the Lautoka Magistrates Court.
Saneel Jeet Singh and Praneel Jeet Singh face one count each of causing unlawful and grievous harm to Kamal Deo.
The incident took place on April 6 when both accused persons allegedly went to the driver and asked to hire a taxi.
However, a few minutes away from where they hired the taxi, both allegedly assaulted the driver.
Both were represented by lawyer, Jyoti Naidu, who requested for bail. However, prosecution officer Corporal Theodore Lew objected to bail stating the offence was committed on the basis of revenge.
Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara asked if both parties had engaged in any incidences of such previously.
Accused persons denied any such incident. However, Corporal Lew said there was a previous incident where the complainant had allegedly assaulted the second accused and thereafter to get revenge the two assaulted him.
Corporal Lew said they should have got the complainant to court for the assault unfortunately they assaulted him.
Therefore, Magistrate Wickramasekara considering the right to bail for both stated that the public interest could not be compromised.
He furthermore said that the accused denied the previous incident but the Prosecutor had to tell the court about it.
Both will spend the Easter weekend in remand before they appear in court on Tuesday.
