Bus Driver Who Allegedly Caused Death Of Woman, 62, Granted Bail

A bus driver who allegedly caused the death of a 62-year-old woman in Lautoka on Monday was granted bail by the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday.
Rohit Rewal, 41, of Tuvu, Lautoka was charged in relation to dangerous driving occasioning the death of a woman was granted bail on a sum of $500 by resident magistrate, Raramasi Salakabou.
Rewal was represented by his counsel, Iqbal Khan.
In making Rewal’s bail application Mr Khan stated that his client had denied the allegations in his caution interview.
Mr Khan said Rewal was a person of good character, never had any previous convictions and he requested the Magistrate to look at the circumstances of the offence.
He further submitted that there was no strong evidence from the prosecution for dangerous driving or over speeding by driver.
In other words, he said the prosecution seemingly had a weak case.
Prosecution officer, Sergeant Arvin Kumar however objected to bail stating that the matter was in the public interest and that the prosecution had strong evidence.
The magistrate said the accused could exercise his right to bail noting that the incident was not committed with an intention.
A stop departure order has been imposed on the accused and has been told to report to the Vitogo Police Station on Mondays and Saturdays between 6am to 6pm. Rewal will reappear in court on July 11.
