Kinoya Black Hawks and Marist have won the mens and women’s Delainavesi Volleyball tournament respectively at the Makosoi Courts yesterday.

In the men’s final, Kinoya Black Hawks beat Raiwai Rebels three sets to two while Marist beat Vatuwaqa on similar margin in the women’s final.

This is the first Delainavesi Volleyball tournament to be staged after 20 years.

Delainavesi Volleyball manager Risiate Baba said they are reviving the association with the aim to get more youths involved since majority of them are unemployed.

“The association was stagnant for more than 20 years so now we are trying to rejuvenate it to try and get the community involved and not be isolated anymore,” Baba said.

“So we want parents and youths to be involved, most of the youths are unemployed and we are trying to change that.

“This is part of Government’s commitment to sports development and that is the bottom line of this tournament.

“We came from a very humble beginning from nothing to this and we are trying to move forward.

“This is the first tournament and our main focus is on the youths and a lot have turned up, a lot of big teams have joined our tournament and that has really boosted the competition.

“We want to keep the youths busy and keep them away from drugs and crime and sport is the best way to do that.”

Baba said they have also set long term plans to educate youths to not only be players but coaches and referees as well and to try get a multi-purpose court into the community.
