Papua New Guinea is using the ITTF Oceania Championships as a selection platform to the Under-18 Junior Youth Olympics, Pacific Mini Games and the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Coach Rea Hoi said they want to give their para, junior and cadet players as much experience as they can get as they really want to put PNG on the map for table tennis.

“We are aware of the upcoming events on the calendar for this year and next year and we want to make sure that we select the best possible team to take to these events,” Hoi said.

“While we have been preparing for the Oceania championships, we are also looking ahead and thinking about the future and we want to do the best we can to be competitive in those events.

“So from here we want to take back some experience and good results back home but also hoping that the players will improve and become better.

“We want PNG to not only just take part in competitions we want them to be a threat and be competitive and in order to do that we need to see the progress of the athletes and make sure they improve each time they attend such an event.

“But the players are learning as much as they can and they have been enjoying every bit of this tournament.”

Hoi said while the players have done well in the first two days of competition, Australia and New Zealand have been a dominant force for them.

“So far the players have done well and we hope we will get some positive results at the end of the tournament,” he said.

Competitions will continue today at the Vodafone Arena.
