Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment Parveen Bala yesterday instructed Labasa Town Council officials to improve the ventilation and lighting in the Labasa market.

Mr Bala told the acting Labasa Town Council chief executive Mohammed Ali and market manager Shalendra Chand to begin the improvement.

“This is a long overdue work and I want the ventilation and lighting to begin from next week,” Mr Bala said.

Mr Bala made the instructions after a surprise visit to the market yesterday following a complaint made by Amrika Prasad, a Labasa market vendor about the delay of ventilation and lighting in the market.

“Sir, I have written many letters to Labasa Town Council from last year requesting for proper ventilation and lighting and nothing has been done,” Mr Prasad told Mr Bala.

“Just stand inside for a while then you will feel how difficult it is to work inside this market.”

Other issues raised by other market vendors, Emele Soso and Melenia Raitabe and Saras Wati involved the high costs and differences in stall fees.

“We are paying more money compared to others who have bigger tables,” Ms Soso said.

“Please, can you remove this unfair treatment?”

“Please, can you decrease the stall fees because it is very expensive,” Ms Wati said.

“Some pay $2.05 while other pay $1.05.”
