Fijians Win Singapore Opener

The Vodafone Fijian 7s team had a strong start in their opening pool match of the Singapore Sevens by thrashing Hong Kong 40-0 yesterday.
The Fijians had a superb start in the first half with a 19-0 lead. Votua, Ba man Waisea Nacuqu took over the playmaker’s berth as he combined well with halfback Seremaia Tuwai. This saw him run in the first try and followed it up with his second when he pounced on a cross kick from winger Nacanieli Labalaba. Captained Osea Kolinisau converted the second try to lead 12-0 and right on the halftime siren Labalaba ran in the third try, which was also converted.
The Gareth Baber coached-side lifted the intensity in the second half as they continue to strengthen their defence and kept to their game structures. Hong Kong only had themselves to blame with poor defence.
Baber made five changes in the second half with Isake Katonibau, Josua Vici, Amenoni Nasilasila, Setareki Bituniyata and Sevuloni Mocenacagi coming in as substitutes.
The Fijians continued with their dominance as Mesulame Kunavula scored their fourth try following an offload from Nacuqu while the other tries came from Nasilasila and Mocenacagi.
Line-up: Jasa Veremalua, Kalione Nasoko, Mesulame Kunavula, Seremaia Tuwai, Waisea Nacuqu, Osea Kolinisau, Nacanieli Labalaba.
