Man’s case transferred to High Court

A man charged with one count each of attempted arson and damaging property had his case transferred to the High Court in Labasa.

Salesh Chand, a chainsaw operator of Doidoi, Seaqaqa, appeared before Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon during a special court sitting at Labasa Magistrates Court yesterday.

It was alleged that on April 13, the 29-year-old, between 7:30pm and 9:30pm attempted to set fire to the house of a Dewan Chand, a 57-year-old farmer.

He was also alleged to have broken 27 louvres valued at $54.

Northern Divisional Police Prosecutor, Inspector Subramani Naidu, requested Magistrate Thennakoon if the case could be transferred to High Court since it was an indictable offence.

The case has been adjourned to April 21 at High Court in Labasa.

Farmers front court for drinking offences, resisting arrest

Two Macuata farmers were further remanded by the Labasa Magistrate Court yesterday for drunk and disorderly, resisting arrest and escaping from lawful custody.

James Sokece, 33, farmer of Naduri and Ilisoni Bulikiobo, 32, farmer of Buavou Village appeared before Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon.

On April 13 at about 5pm in front of the Seaqaqa Barber Shop, Police Constable Hulasi Olivia of Seaqaqa Police Station arrested Sokece and Bulikiobo for being drunk and disorderly, but they resisted arrest.

While at the Seaqaqa cell, the two accused escaped from lawful custody.

They were arrested the following day by the Seaqaqa Police Station investigating officer.

The case has been adjourned to April 19.

Man charged for defiling teenager

A 22-year-old labourer of Lajonia, Labasa was remanded in custody yesterday for breaching his bail conditions.

He is charged for the defilement of a 14-year-old girl.

Ashneel Lal appeared before Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon during a special court sitting at the Labasa Magistrates Court.

It is alleged that Lal defiled the complainant on April 12 and April 13 in Labasa.

The case has been adjourned to April 19.
