Teachers and students of Lomaivuna High School were thrilled to be visited by the Speaker of Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni for her ‘Meet the Speaker’ programme yesterday.

The programme enabled the Speaker to explain her role as the Speaker, the role of Parliament, Parliament works, how decisions are made in Parliament and how students and youths can engage with Parliament.

Assistant Principal Lydia Praise said it was an honour for them to have the Speaker at their school.

“It is indeed an honour for us to see and hear from the Speaker today as she travelled all the way from Suva, leaving behind her busy schedule.”

“The students were so excited to be part of the programme. They were so eager to learn more about Parliament gauging by the questions they asked the Speaker,” Ms Praise said.

The Speaker also took time to encourage the students to study hard and strive for excellence in everything they do.

She also thanked the parents that turned up in numbers to support the programme and also listened to the Speaker.

Year 13 student Miliana Matai said she was very happy to be part of the programme and to have the Speaker at her school elaborate more about Parliament.

“Today, I’ve learnt lots of new things including the works of Parliament and how can a youth, or any citizen of Fiji engage with Parliament,” Ms Matai said.

Naitasiri villagers and students were the target of the Meet the Speaker and Parliament Bus programmes conducted by the Civic Education and Media team of Parliament this month.

The team visited Naitasiri High School, Naluwai and Serea villages last week and will visit Delaiwaimale, Viria, Gusuisavu, Nacokaika and Delaidamanu villages later this week.
