Minister Launches Literacy, Numeracy Programme

A programme that will enhance Year 1 to Year 4 literacy and numeracy was launched yesterday.
Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts launched the programme during the Fiji Head Teachers Association Annual Conference at Girmit Centre in Lautoka.
“It is from Year One to Year Four in primary school, where the real foundation on the basics of literacy and numeracy is laid,” he said.
Mr Reddy said they had assessed that a lot of numeracy and literacy-based learnings came was born during the final years of schooling for children.
“However, the crux of the matter is that if the basics of literacy and numeracy are not filtered in the child properly. How can results suffice?
“We had identified this gap and through our curriculum content we have slowly rolled it out to the lower primary schools.
“Now we are injecting more strategies to bolster this initiative; the vision to solidify the basics of literacy and numeracy of our children,” he said.
Mr Reddy said the Curriculum Development Unit of the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts partnered with Access to Quality Education Programme (AQEP) to roll out a literacy and numeracy strategy for these streams.
