Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the micro and small business grants scheme has grown into one of his Government’s most important and successful programmes.

“As of today – we will have directly assisted over 8000 entrepreneurs with grant funding totalling $7.9 million,” he said.

He was speaking at a disbursement of grants at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka yesterday.

“And that doesn’t even count the many more thousands of family members and loved ones who also have benefitted from the growth and success of those businesses.

“The response from the Fijian people has been overwhelming, and, two years on, we have laid down a foundation for an enterprising culture in Fiji that will bring benefits for generations to come. Because the success of every business we help start or expand feeds right back into the Fijian economy.

“As these businesses grow, jobs are created and ordinary Fijians are given more opportunities to learn new skills and develop invaluable expertise in business. And that is a proven pathway to combatting poverty and improving the standard of living for our people.

“I’m delighted to be here at Lawaqa Park as we give our entrepreneurs from the Nadroga and Navosa Provinces the opportunity to launch new enterprises, or take their existing businesses to the next level, by handing over these micro and small business grant cheques.

“Just last month, I was in Navua to kick-off the 2016-2017 round of disbursements for the Micro and Small Business Grant Scheme, where we funded 549 recipients in the Serua and Namosi provinces. And today, we are more than doubling that number, as we award cheques to 1,202 recipients from Nadroga and Navosa. This handover represents an investment of $1.1 million – over one million dollars my Government is investing in your abilities and in your vision for success.

“Back in 2015, the big idea behind the launch of this scheme was very simple. My Government saw an opportunity to empower thousands of Fijians by tapping into the innovative and enterprising spirit of our people. An opportunity to give ordinary Fijians the means to improve their own lives and the lives of those around them – by giving them a leg-up to start or expand their businesses.

“We are also doing this because my Government is a caring Government. My Government understands the everyday challenges of ordinary Fijians and we want to provide practical solutions.”
