Rape sentencing case moved to High Court

A 30-year-old man found guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl is awaiting sentencing to be delivered by the High Court in Suva.

The case was called before Judge Justice Salesi Temo yesterday.

State lawyer Dharshani Kumar told the court that the accused was convicted at the Magistrates Court after a one day trial.

His case was then sent to the High Court for sentencing.

Justice Temo said that he would need to check the file before sentencing the accused as he had to see if the trial conducted at the Magistrates Court was fairly conducted.

On May 24, 2008, the accused raped a 13-year-old girl at a village in Gau.

The accused was being represented by Safaira Ratu.

He will be sentenced on May 5.
