Former CID Director’s Bail Extended

  The former director for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Luke Rawalai had his bail extended by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday. The matter was called before Magistrate Makereta Mua.

The former director for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Luke Rawalai had his bail extended by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

The matter was called before Magistrate Makereta Mua.

Rawalai was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with three counts of abuse of office and two counts of receiving a bribe.

FICAC lawyer Sam Savumiramira requested additional time to serve second phase disclosures.

Defence lawyer Aman Ravindra-Singh informed the court that he wanted to have the matter transferred to the High Court in Suva. However he has yet to file an application for that.

Rawalai’s two counts of receiving a bribe were alleged to have taken place between January 2, 2012 and December 5, 2013; and between December 1, 2012 and January 31, 2014 totaling $8123.

The three counts of abuse of office is alleged to have occured between June 17, 2011 and March 14, 2014 in Suva; between February 1, 2013 and March 31, 2013 in Suva; and between December 1, 2012 and January 31, 2014 in Suva.

He allegedly interfered with the Police Investigation conducted into an allegation of rape which is an act Prejudicial to the Fiji Police Force; did an arbitrary act for the purpose of gain namely directed the Nadi Police Station Criminal Investigation Division Personnel without any evidence and against the findings of the Nadi CID; and abuse of the authority of his office did arbitrary acts for the purpose of gain in an allegation of forgery of a will.

The case has been adjourned to May 16, for second phase disclosures to be served.
