The Northland rugby side escaped with a narrow 18-15 win over Macuata during the first round of the Skipper Cup competition at Subrail Park, Labasa yesterday.

Northland team manager Maciu Koroi told SUNsports that it was a close call and they had to fight hard to win.

“Macuata is a hard team to beat on their home ground and we had to work hard for the win,” he said.

“This is our first game and we thank Macuata for giving us a good game.”

It was Northland’s prop Sireli Ledua who scored the first try soon after kickoff.

The Macuata side fought back and narrowed the scoreline 5-3 though a Sosiceni Daugunu penalty.

Macuata pushed forward and took the lead when they scored through Viliame Gonevulavula as they led 10-5.

Northland hit back and scored a try to Elia Tamanisau with the conversion going over leaving the scores at 10-12.

Macuata backed by their vocal fans ran in their second try to Pita Sadrugu to lead 15-12 at half time.

The second half was evenly contested with Northland’s points coming from the boots of Josua Yavala and Keasi Naigulevu.

Macuata’s assistant coach, Milio Toganivalu said they are still working on building-up their team and they need to work on their defence.

“I thank Northland for giving us a good game and we will work on our defence before our next game against Naitasiri.”
