Finau Seru Nagera, Director of Audit, Auditor-General’s Office, is ready to serve as the president of the Fiji Institute of Accountants.

She is the first i-Taukei woman and the second from the public sector to hold the post.

Ms Nagera replaces Jerome Kado, who stepped down as President after serving his 12-month term.

The handover came during the annual general meeting at the association’s congress which ended yesterday at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort, Yanuca Island.

Recognising the excellent work done by her predecessor and other members, Ms Nageira now hopes to continue with the momentum and build upon where they have left off.

She said the members accepted and adopted the strategic plan for FIA for 2017–2021.

“That is going to be focus of the council in coming months trying to implement the strategic plan for the next five years,” Ms Nagera.

“Basically the strategic plan had what the members want and what direction the association wants to take. There is a lot to do to implement the strategic plan. It is very simple and there was comprehensive consultation.”

The Fiji Institute of Accountants has more than 800 members.

Ms Nagera recognised the efforts of the council members who had given their time and efforts to something which they had effectively volunteered for to carry out without receiving any payment.

“It’s an honour to be appointed the president of the FIA getting the confidence of the council members,” she said.

“Being women in leadership; this is also a positive move by the FIA towards trying to encourage women in leadership roles.”

Ms Nagera hails from Mualevu, Vanuabalavu, in Lau and has been in the public sector for more than 15 years.

She joined the FIA in 2009 and as part of the council in mid-2014 and served as vice-president the year before taking up the presidency role.

The new elected vice-president, Zarin Khan, said the council now had something to focus on and would ensure that they worked according to the new strategic plan.

Renu Chand, who continues to hold the position of treasurer,  said she was very pleased with Ms Nagera coming into the Council and now Presidency.

“Which makes me proud, she has the full support of the council,” she said.

She thanked the sponsors Vodafone, Westpac, Sun Insurance, Merchant Finance, Carpenters Fiji Group, British American Tobacco, Marsh, Coca-Cola Amatil, Datec, Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort &Spa, Fiji Water, and Pure Fiji.
