The Suva rugby team fought back to beat Malolo 31-22 in their 2017 Skipper Cup opener at Prince Charles Park, Nadi yesterday.

What happened: The Saiasi Fuli coached- Suva side started strongly and scored an early try to Mosese Tikoduadua as they took a 7-0 lead after the conversion went over.

In the 17th minute Malolo struck back through winger Eroni Vucago who scored a try, which was not converted as they trail 5-7.

Suva with their big forwards dominated possession but poor ball handling by the backs denied them from extending their lead.

Malolo took the lead for the first time after lock Timoci Vuadreu slipped his way past the Suva defence to score under the post with the conversion going over.

Halftime: Suva 7- 12 Malolo

Malolo continued their dominance in the second spell and extended their lead to 17-7 from a try to Meli Qainiuci. This woke up the Suva side as they scored two quick tries to regain the lead 19-17. But Malolo had other ideas when Vucago scored his second try as they hit the front 22-19.  The Suva forwards then again took control and scored two more tries to seal the final score at 31-22.

Big play: Malolo’s fast backline exploited loopholes in the Suva defence but wrong options at crucial times cost them the game.

Star turn: When down the Suva forwards immediately took control and this resulted in four tries being scored.

Comments: Suva coach Saiasi Fuli said: “I thank the boys for a job well done. This is a step-up for the boys. Ninety percent of the old players have left the team and we are fielding new players who displayed great rugby against Malolo today.

Malolo coach Mosese Volavola said: “There were some errors that we had committed and we are planning to improve on that come next week. When we were training I reminded them that Suva would come against us in the last ten minutes and that is what we witnessed here today.”
