The Telecom Fijiana 7s team have reached the Women’s World Sevens Series Cup semifinals for the first time yesterday. The Iliesa Tanivula coached-side upset USA 26-19 in the Cup quarterfinals to take on Series leaders New Zealand in the Cup semifinals where they went down 21-0.

They bounced back and almost snatched the bronze medal of the Kitakyushu Sevens in Japan only to be denied when Australia fought back to claim a 19-17 win.

Fijiana 7s captain Ana Maria Roqica said they played their hearts out as knew that they had to step-up their game if they want to progress past the quarterfinals.

“We’re really proud of ourselves because it has been a long time since we got back and had a taste of what it is like to be in the semifinals so we are happy about our performance,” she said.

“I told the girls that we cannot go down, we played a good game yesterday in our pool games so we needed to keep it up and the girls really gave all their best just to win the quarterfinals.”

In the Cup quarterfinals, Fijiana trailed USA 12-5 in the first half. The Americans scored their tries through Kristen Thomas and Naya Tapper while winger Raijieli Daveua dotted down for the Fijians.

In the second half, Fijiana ran in three tries to Miriama Naiobasali, Timaima Ravisa and Rusila Nagasau while Viniana Riwai slotted in two conversions.

Meanwhile, Series leaders New Zealand scored a 17-14 win over Canada in the Cup final, last night.
