Global OHS Day to be marked on Friday

The World Occupational Health and Safety Day will be celebrated in the three divisions across the country on Friday.

While speaking in Parliament yesterday, Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Jone Usamate said the theme of the celebration for this year was ‘Optimise the Collection and Use of Occupational Safety and Health Data’.

He said it mainly focused on the critical need for countries to improve their capacity to collect and utilise reliable occupational safety and health (OSH) data.

“This focuses on the ‘protection of labour rights and promotion of safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in hazardous employment’,” Mr Usamate said.

He urged the public to participate in the events they have organised.

“I urge the Honourable Members and the public watching from home to mark the remaining dates,” he said.

“Ensure that they participate as this is an opportunity to raise awareness on Occupational Health and Safety on a national platform and examine ways in which we can offer better services to assist in the reduction of workplace accidents and deaths.”
