Nadi Villages Back Martintar 7s

The Nakovacake rugby side will be one of the teams to watch at the 4th FWCC Martintar 7s tournament, which kickoff at Prince Charles Park, Nadi this weekend.

The Navoci based-team are laced with players from the villages of Namotomoto and Navoci who have gone on to don the national jumper. One of them is Telecom Fijiana 7s coach and former Brumbies winger Iliesa Tanivula.

Tournament official Timoci Waqaniburotu said McDonald’s Saunaka and Tokatoka Westfield Dragons are among the big teams leading the charge to win the top prize money.

“The support shown from the Nadi village teams this year are tremendous and they are preparing well to win the Martintar 7s title,” he said.

“A total of nineteen teams from Nadi are now confirmed in the draws and they have every chance to appear in the elimination of the Cup competition.”

Giant killers Mosi Steelers, Tovolea, Dratabu and Western Marine are the other teams that are capable of winning the tournament as well.

“Smugglers, Abba and Mosi Duavata Youths will be carrying the underdog tag.

“A total of 40 teams have been confirmed with Police being the late inclusion. There are going to be ten pools with four teams in each pool.”

Waqaniburotu said with Tabadamu, First Light Taveuni and clubs from Nadroga, Lautoka and Yasawa already in the draws rugby fans should come out in numbers to support their teams and witness top rugby sevens action.

The tournament starts on Friday and the entry fees are $6 adults, $2 children (under-12)
