Young surfers battled it out during the Kit Deger Memorial Junior event at the Beachouse last Saturday.

Fiji Surfing Association coach Ian Portingale said the surf was very smooth around 0.9m on the sets with 30 junior surfers showing plenty of skills.

In the Under-16 boys local knowledge helped Api Camaro to claim the win ahead of Kalani Wakeham, John Vasea and Ulai Takana . The U16 girls was a tough battle with very close results that saw Kiesha Wakeham come in first, Kayla Wakeham at second place with Maria Nailawa claiming the third spot.

In the U12 boys a polished display by Darcy Dwyer saw him hold off Teo Degei who settled for second place with Kalama McKellar scooping the third spot while Saiasi Tubamasi was placed 4th. The U12 girls saw Kiesha Wakeham claim another first place ahead of Alena Chongsue,  Polly Chongsue and Talei Dromunisiga.

“It was a great day of surfing and hanging out on the beautiful grass area of Beachouse as the surfers competed. Special thanks to Andrew Brown who provided the venue and structure. To the Deger family for their kind presentation of a ‘Chair in the Air’ for each of the winners.”

Portingale said the surfers are now keen for next year’s event.
