The Ministry of Education’s focus on libraries in schools is applauded. Libraries are essential in the education of our children. Books will help students in reading, writing and comprehension.

There is a correlation between educational standards and examination passes to students’ exposure to reading materials available in schools.

Schools that are well stocked with books and material in a wide range of subjects tend to do well.

In this day and age of internet, there are books and materials available online.

We also need to make this available to schools. The more students read, the more they become knowledgeable. Knowledge is power. Power is opportunities and success. Their English, spoken and written, will improve.

Just how important books are to students?

Here’s a collection of quotes from different authors who highlight the importance of libraries to students and all people.

  •  Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities. R. David Lankes
  •  To build up a library is to create a life. It’s never just a random collection of books. – Carlos María Domínguez

  •  A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life. – Henry Ward Beecher
  •  Cutting libraries during a recession is like cutting hospitals during a plague. – Eleanor Crumblehulme
  •   Libraries raised me. – Ray Bradbury
  •  Everything you need for better future and success has already been written. And guess what? All you have to do is go to the library. Henri Frederic Amiel
  •  Let’s allow children to ask questions about the world and find the answers. And the wonderful thing is that once a child learns to use a library, the doors to learning are always open. – Laura Bush
  •  The standard library saves programmers from having to reinvent the wheel. – Bjarne Stroustrup
  •  A great library is one nobody notices because it is always there, and always has what people need. Vicki Myron
  •  Libraries are reservoirs of strength, grace and wit, reminders of order, calm and continuity, lakes of mental energy, neither warm nor cold, light nor dark…. In any library in the world, I am at home, unselfconscious, still and absorbed. – Germaine Greer
  •  What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it feels about education. – Harold Howe
  •  Libraries are the future of reading. Courtney Milan
  •  When I read about the way in which library funds are being cut and cut, I can only think that American society has found one more way to destroy itself. – Isaac Asimov

So we must strive to ensure that all our schools, no matter where they are, are  well stocked with books in a library.
