In an event marking ANZAC day at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, a retired Royal Australian Air Force Group Captain Michael Drummond was deeply touched by the lyrics of a particular ANZAC hymn.

Honour the dead, our country’s fighting brave … where poppies blow and sorrow seeds her flowers.

“This is comparable to those that I have seen around the world. This shows the warmth and respect of the Fijian people for Australia and New Zealand,” he said.

The 61-year-old Queenslander is an Australian Ex-service man who had served 32 years in countries such as USA, Iraq, and South East Asia.

“This is a highly respected and solemn occasion for us. It is very important and happy that we are able to hold it here,” he said.

Resort general manager Peter Hopgood said the service was not to celebrate or glorify war, but rather to remember those that have served their countries during conflict and crisis.

“On ANZAC Day we salute not only the spirit of the ANZACS, but in paying tribute to them, we take the opportunity to dedicate ourselves, to striving for our own countries, as they did, and upholding their finest qualities of courage, commitment, endurance and mateship,” he said.

“ANZAC Day is not merely a date, or some remote campaign, but rather a spirit. It is a time to reflect on the qualities of past generations of Australians and New Zealanders who in hardship displayed courage, discipline, self-sacrifice, self-reliance, resourcefulness and friendship.”

“We remember those who continue to suffer through their physical or mental scars, including those next of kin whose grief and sense of loss can never be eased.”
