Goverment plans to Honour Women of Indenture in Fiji

Celebrations to commemorate women of the Indentured Labour System in Fiji will be held next month.

This was revealed by Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala, in Parliament yesterday.

“All centres will mark May 14, 2017 as a day of remembrance in particular for the women of indenture,” he said.

The day will coincided with Mother’s Day celebrations.

The Minister said events would be organised on that day to remember the hardships and sacrifices of mothers, wives, daughters and sisters under the system as part of a larger municipal family celebration in each centre.

Mr Bala said hosting mothers and wives, daughters and sisters of Fiji would pay proper respects to those strong women who laid the foundations of our families and contributed immensely towards national building under indenture.

The programme will also include iTaukei local history, culture, performance arts and oral narratives as part of the on-going programmes among local councils.

He said it would further include celebrating the diverse multi-cultural nature of our municipalities.
