More informal settlers, who are commonly referred to as squatters, will be given proper land leases in the coming financial year.

Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya yesterday informed Parliament of the work FijiFirst Government had done to provide squatters with a new lease of life.

In the next Financial Year of 2017-2018, the ministry was planning to issue an additional 126 Approval Notices in the respective Divisions as follows:

  1.  Central Eastern Division – 39 Approval Notices for Wainadoi Informal Settlement in Navua.
  2. Northern Division – 60 Approval Notices for Informal Settlements of Vitadra, Boca, Valebasoga and  Avua all in Macuata, Vanua Levu.
  3. Western Division – 26 Approval Notices for Naqoro in Rakiraki and Waimari Informal Settlements in Rakiraki.

In the current financial year, the FijiFirst Government provided approval notices to some 238 people around the country.

“I would also like to highlight in this August House that the Ministry is already progressing work on the renewal of the leases that have expired and so far 788 leases have been renewed.”

It had been the focus of FijiFirst Government to provide proper leases to those living in informal settlements. Using these land leases as collateral, people have been able to secure loans from banks to start up small businesses and to invest in their children’s education.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has previously spoken about how holding proper land titles could benefit those who have lived as squatters for decades.

Last month, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama gave out 21 approval notices to Naulu and Kinoya squatter settlers.
