Swimming fraternity mourns death of former national coach

Former national swimming head coach Horace Petersen has passed away in Auckland, New Zealand on Monday morning.

This was confirmed to SUNsports by Fiji Swimming coach Sharon Pickering- Smith.

Petersen who was fondly known as ‘Mr P’ coached Smith from 1977 to 1995.

“He was a very humble man,” she told SUNsports yesterday.

“Mr P disciplined us and started coaching me in 1977. He was the one that taught me humility and was always there to encourage me. This is sad news for us the swimming fraternity as a whole. To me he was like a father away from home.”

At the peak of her swimming career Smith dominated every competition at the Suva Olympic Pool.

Guided by Petersen, she made her debut as a Fiji representative at the age of 12 during the 1979 Suva South Pacific Games in Suva.

“We were just planning to attend Petersen’s 90th birthday celebration in October,” she added.

“He was such an awesome coach he coached me to my first Pacific Games, first Commonwealth Games and first Olympic Games.”

Petersen, 89, died following a long illness. He is survived by two children, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
