Ex-teacher’s Trial Deferred To November

The trial for a former primary school teacher charged with sexual offences against his students is set for November.

Justice Salesi Temo fixed a new trial date from November 27 to December 1.

The matter was called at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

Umesh Prasad is charged with four counts of rape, two counts of indecent assault and seven counts of sexual assault.

Prasad is alleged to have committed these offences between January 1, 2010 and October 31, 2013 while serving as a teacher in a primary school.

Defence lawyer Aman Ravindra-Singh informed the court that his client has been in remand for 11 months and 10 days and he further made a bail application yesterday.

Justice Temo told Mr Ravindra Singh to file and serve motions and affidavits for the bail application.

The case has been adjourned to May 12 for hearing of the bail application.
