Vodafone Tiliva 7s officials were pleased after day one of the competition despite the damp ground conditions yesterday.

Tournament director Alipate Nakasava said: “The first day of the tournament has been overwhelming and there has been a lot of support from the various teams in Fiji that are vying to win this tournament.

“We are also happy to have five Police officers, referees and as well as the Medics team available at the tournament to ensure the safety of the players.

“It is also encouraging to see that teams spend so much money just to travel to the island and compete in this competition,” Nakasava said.

Nakasava said the aim of hosting this tournament was to develop the villages and engage youths to be associated with the sport.

“The tournament is mainly to support rural rugby in Kadavu. As you know Kadavu is well known for rugby and have continuously produced a lot of great players who were part of the national side.

“It will also develop the villages like Tiliva, Lagalevu and Matasawalevu.

“Also we aim to develop the schools and try to build more classrooms and teachers quarters as well,” he said.

“Our long term plan is to have this tournament organised as a yearly event and at the same time promote sports tourism to the other parts of Fiji and the world.”
