Thirteen people were charged with a total of 32 separate incidents in April, says the office of the Director of Prosecutions (ODPP).

The data was released yesterday by the ODPP and relates  to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month. This data is confined to incidents of serious sexual offences only.

The offences were rape (24), indecent assault (3), defilement (1) and sexual assault (4).

There were 13 victims of the 32 separate incidents of which 8 victims were under the age of 18 years old.

There were 7 incidents where the accused and the victims were related to each other. Of these 7, there was one serious incident where the accused is a 65 year old grandfather and the victim is his 4 year old granddaughter.

Another serious sexual offence involved a 66 year old uncle and his 8 year old niece.

There was one serious sexual offence involving a 32 year old accused person and a 15 year old boy.

One case of rape and indecent assault was withdrawn after discontinuance (Nolle Prosequi) was filed. This was an incident of false complaint where the victim conspired with others to make a false statement.
