Excitement builds up for Northern women

Excitement is increasing for the women in the North who will attend the National Women’s Expo in Suva next month.
27 women from Bua, 33 from Macuata and 32 from Cakaudrove will represent the North.
Representative, Marisela Riwai, of Nasekula Village is part of the team from the Macuata province.
Ms Riwai said she was excited because it was her first time to be a part of an event of such magnitude.
“An expo as such helps us to market our products and helps shine it so people can see, appreciate and hopefully purchase them,” Ms Riwai said.
“I for one am very excited for this event and I look forward to it. Preparation is going well so far,” said the tailor.
Ms Riwai was chosen because of her sewing skills which she displayed during the Macuata Womens’ Expo this year.
In an earlier presentation by the Bua SoqosoqoVakamarama president, Ana Lalanabaravi, said that preparation by the women was well underway.
In an earlier interview with the Minister for Women Mereseini Vuniwaqa reiterated the need to recognise and appreciate rural women’s economic contribution to society.
“They are often constrained by unequal access to productive resources and services and inadequate or inaccessible infrastructure,” Ms Vuniwaqa said.
“I wish to state here that it is time to walk away from such practices and realise the potential of women as breadwinners and income-earners as well.”
