A 39-year-old man was convicted by the Labasa Magistrates Court with two drug-related charges yesterday.

Peceli Yavala, of Dromuninuku Village in Cakaudrove, who appeared before Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon was charged with one count each of cultivation of illicit drugs and possession of illicit drugs.

The court heard that Yavala was arrested with four kilogrammes of marijuana while travelling along the Seaqaqa Road in a taxi five years ago.

Magistrate Thennakoon ruled in favour of the prosecution and therefore convicted the accused for the two charges.

He has allowed mitigation to be heard today from the defence and sentencing is expected to be delivered tomorrow.
